British Saturday Night TV

I'm not really talking about ITV here who I think still have a pretty good Saturday night entertainment schedule but what has happened to BBC 1?! I know it's the summer and things tend to get boring and dreary on TV round about now and that in autumn/winter we have the Strictly and X Factor battle. However, I'm sure I remember even as recently as 2 years ago having really good family entertainment shows on BBC1 all year round. Now I understand there's cuts and things but a Puppet hosted show and 'I Love My Country' are to be totally honest, absolute drivel! I feel so sorry for the people presenting and participating in these programmes!
The Muppets were good but I'm afraid nowadays anything like that is going to struggle to top them.
What about a revert back to something the whole family can enjoy like a Variety Show or a Generation Game style thing. Why was Total Wipeout axed. Crystal Maze/It's a knockout?   I'm sure I speak for many others when I say I miss this kind of wholesome entertainment rather than some American woman wiggling and thrusting her various assets at me through the screen.

Or how about a good Drama. What has happened to all the great adaptations of classic children's books that we used to get. Everyone loved those. Nowadays children have to suffer with cartoon nonsense and American comedy weirdness.

My message is thus, BRING BACK GOOD TV!!

Blog suspended during exams

I have made the sad decision to suspend my blog during exam season. I should be back on May 19th all being well.
I went to see High Society at the theatre 2 weeks ago and I rate it 10/10. It's on tour in the UK at the moment so I recommend it to you all. The lady next to me was resting her feet on the barrier of the orchestra pit. Now what if that had collapsed on the players below? Some people just don't think. She was acting like a teenager at the back of a cinema when she was really 60 and in a theatre! Grrrrrr!
Anyway bye for now!

TV Review: Comic Relief does Glee Club

I have several feelings about this program that I want to discuss. Yes it is primarily a children's program but it is definitetly for the older kids and big kids like myself. I am interested in choirs and glee clubs, show choirs and that sort of thing so I tune in every year. The trouble is, things seem to be going from bad to worse.

The first series was good, really good. The groups stuck to good songs with simple tunes and a lot of them did musical theatre performances which were really brilliant.

The next series was the worse, nobody sung a show tune or older song (maybe they weren't allowed, I dunno) it was all recent pop songs. The trouble with songs these days is that they are really hard to sing (most singers today just seem to screech) or there's a difficult rap or rhythm in there or something. The kids were trying to put harmonies in which just weren't there and they were all out of tune. Most of these songs just don't have harmonies to go with them. Not many people write songs with good harmonies anymore. If they had sung a showtune or older song, things would have been much easier for them and they would have been able to stick somewhat in tune.

The series which has just finished was on the whole better, still some awful recent songs in there (did we really have to hear Wings by Little Mix, THREE TIMES!! There are thousands of other songs you could hsve picked.). On the other hand we had some kids doing Gospel and musical theatre and they were getting all the best praise from the judges. they seemed to be having the most fun as well. Lots of these groups were formed from drama schools and said they were really keen on musicals and then they came out and screeched along to some Katy Perry song, why not play to your strengths!

I also think loads of these songs aren't suitable for kids aged 8-12 (the age group CBBC is aimed at). The lyrics are sometimes incredibly unsuitable and there's the swearing (which they had to block out of course but they know it's there). Do the really young kids in the groups have any clue what they are singing about? If you don't know the meaning of the song, it's incredibly hard to put any sort of feeling into it.

By siinging all these recent hits over and over again. It makes kids think these are the only songs available to listen to. Kids should have the opportunity to listen to older (and better, haha!) songs and a program like CRDGC would be an excellent program to showcase some older songs on. Or songs from other genres other than pop. Like I say, the best groups were the ones who broadened the scope of their performances.

FInally why do producers of kids TV shows think that children have the memory of a millipede? At the start of each show we have to have about 5 minutes of repetition of what happened yesterday! I'm sure the kids can remember, they are not that stupid! Anyone who missed the previous show has probably watched it on Iplayer by now anyway. The constant going backstage to 'see how the groups are feelng' drives me nuts. All the groups are feeling nervous and excited, you'd expect them to be! We don't need constant reminding. In some of the shows it took 11 minutes to actually get round to the siinging. 11 MINUTES!!

I'm not going to be watching next year. I can't bear it any more.

Musing on Comedians

I don't know about you but I just don't find most of the popular comedians funny. Especially male comedians. I don't find them offensive or anything like that, they just don't make me laugh. Some people have a really big obsession with comedians and go to see them at the theatre all the time. The prospect of doing that doesn't fill me with excitement I have to say. Everybody else seems to love them but I'm just not keen.
However there are two female comedians/comediennes that I do think are very good and funny. Miranda Hart and Sarah Millican. I think its because instead of telling jokes and stuff, they talk about funny things that have happened in their lives. Silly accidents and that sort of thing. I am very accident prone myself and I have lots of stories from school and uni about funny  and silly things that have happened. So that's why I think I prefer this kind of comedian. Its strange that male comedians don't seem to do this as much but maybe they're just embarrased about their silly stories and don't want to share them!
Sarah Millican talks about the TV programmes she finds funny as does Harry Hill. I love watching TV too so I reckon that's why I like those too. They often have the same opinions of programmes that I watch that I have!
Anyone from I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue or Just a Minute is really funny as is Stephen Fry because he is so clever and likes learning random facts, like me!

But Michael Mcintyre, Lee Nelson, Russell Howard, Lee Evans, the list goes on. I just can't get excited about them. Sorry!

Clever tricks lecturers use

Our lecturer played a clever trick on us on Monday. I'll set the scene for you.

So our lecturer has been talking for about an hour about Team Goals and Communication. There is a quiet rumble at the back of the lecture theatre as people talk. You can sense a feeling of restlessness from the back half of the class and a feeling of restlessness from the front as we try nad concentrate over all the whispering and muttering going on!
It's two o clock (this is a two hour lecture by the way, 1 to 3pm) and our lecturer looks at his watch and says.
"Okay I'll give you a break now. We'll carry on with this in 5 minutes." The guy behind me says to his mate:
"He does drag on, hurry up!" Well with respect this is a 2 hour lecture so he's not going to talk for just an hour and give up is he?!
The majority of the back half of the class geta up and leaves. they think the lecturer thinks they're just going to the loo or to get a coffee, but they're taking their bags and coats with them. They're leaving, for good.
Once everyone is out the door (two minutes later) our lecturer says,
"Right now they've gone we can get on with this. What we had in the first hour was an overview. Now this is the stuff really related to your assignment and exam." Brilliant! He's saved all the important stuff for after the whsiperers have left! Now they are severely disadvantaged for the exam and our essay and it's all their own fault. No one came back into the room after 5 minutes, seriously no one! Just us front half who actually want to learn here now!

This has been botherig me for a while now. Lectures are compulsory at uni and if you miss the odd one through illness or family or traffic problems so be it. But to not want to listen in a lecture, isn't the idea of uni that you are supposed to come to lectures to learn? Why are you at uni if you don't want to come to lectures? It's a waste of time AND money. It seems sad to me that some people are happy to waste their parents money like that. Or worse if you're paying to be at uni, your money!
This excellent article shows me I am not alone in pondering this mystery.

The comments at the bottom are anoying. They're basically saying that anyone at a 'former polytechnic' or former 'teaching training college' doesn't want to work. Not true. the majority of us do.
I know this isn't my problem and I shouldn't be worrying about it. I'm not worried just curious as to why some poeple think this is the right way to behave at university.

Bumblebee Poem

I thought I'd share one of my poems on my blog this week. It's about a Bumblebee and the setting is totally up to your imagination.
The Bumblebee Poem

I look to the sky with both of my eyes
And guess what I see, a pretty surprise
It's yellow and black and goes buzz when it flies
After it's stung you it curls up and dies
I look to see the bumble bee
And I see it coming straight for me
From the table I quickly fled
It won't catch me behind the shed!

Cute animals!

Nothing to muse about today. I can't think of any topic of interest.

I was trying to think up a new chemistry joke the other day, but all the best ones argon.

Cute picture alert!
I'm going home next week for a bit of a rest. Hooray! So I'll be writing from home next week.
See you then

Film Review: Anchors Aweigh (1945)

Yesterday I took a rare afternoon off to watch one of the rare musicals we have on the TV these days. This one was Anchors Aweigh! Starring Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, and Gene Kelly, in which two sailors go on a four-day shore leave in Hollywood, accompanied by music and song, meet an aspiring young singer and try to help her get an audition at MGM. It also had some amazing pianist bloke guest starring as himself, I'd never heard of him but he was very good.

Overall I'd give the film 4/5. My only criticism being that the plot was very thin and similar to On the Town (which was actually made 4 years later and is vastly superior, hello Mr Leonard Bernstein).
On to the positives though. I haven't seen a Kathryn Grayson film before but what an amazing singer she is, really awesome and I can't wait to see another film with her in it.
Frank Sinatra was looking, well...young! He was very good though with splendid singing, of course!

Gene Kelly of course stole the show. I've always been more of a Fred (Astaire) fan myself but Kelly did win me over. I especially enjoyed his dream sequence where he went into a fairytale land and danced with Jerry (of Tom and Jerry fame) very clever and groundbreaking at the time of course!
However my absolute favourite part was the dream sequence dance at the end with Kelly as a bandit and Grayson as a princess. It was a paso doble flavoured dance (because for some reason they were all hanging out in some Mexican quarter of LA, if there is such a thing?) and the choreography, wow, just wow I'm speechless!
Of course there's a happy ending and everybody gets the girl they wanted (one girl with Heidi-esque plaits has managed to tame them by the end of the film!). The little beggar girl and Gene did this amazing dance together too.
Well worth a watch if you have an afternoon free.

Cyclists on Pavements!

This is really one of my pet hates!
I have just looked up the definition of a pavement/sidewalk in the Dictionary:

'A raised paved or asphalted path for pedestrians at the side of a road'. Yes note the inportant word there, P-E-D-E-S-T-R-I-A-N-S!! They're for people just minding their own business walking along and suddenly you hear a whooshing sound behind you and you squish into the side and you've jsut missed being run over by a cyclist!

A simple excuse-me would suffice!
Roads are for any form of transport which could cause danger for walkers, surely! I understand that some roads are busy, but buy the right kit and you'll be alright and ask yourself the question, should I really be cycling along here anyway? If a road is really busy.
The reason I am so frustrated by this is that I am partially sighted and the pavements where I live are very narrow and I think cyclists should take this into account (the narrow pavements obviously, not my eyes!). I find it hard to see cyclists coming up behind me. We have underpasses under the road here as well and although there are big blue notices saying 'CYCLISTS DISMOUNT' most cyclists completely ignore this and zoom down the subway at great speed meaning all the pedestrians have to move out the way. This is fine if you're a young person like me but I am concerned for older people who can't move out the way so quickly and might go flying.

Why can't cyclists have a bit of respect or just common sense really, these days. Just a simple excuse me when you're behind me and I'd happily get out your way. I am mindful of other walkers on the pavement (for example, those who want to walk faster than me, I let them pass). So why can't cyclists do that too?

The Bexhill to Hastings Link Road

Yep as promised here is my opinion on the infuriating Link Road. (Honestly aren't there more important things to worry about!)

Please bear in mind this is my own opinion, yours may be different but any rude comments will find themselves deleted. Constructive criticism is fine though.

Yes I am all for saving the environment and preserving a beautiful place like Combe Haven but sadly this road is now desperately needed due to the number of people coming to live in East Sussex. The current road is just permanently clogged with cars crawling along at a snails pace. I have often been stuck in traffic jams on that road for 15 minutes or more. Sadly it is just not fit for purpose anymore and we really do need another route. What happens if your a doctor at the Conquest for instance, stuck on that road and you're needed at the hospital to save someones life? With two possible routes between the two towns I feel things would be much easier.

Another thing that is getting on my nerves is that some of the protesters getting arrested aren't even from around here. They come from as far afield as Cardiff and Sheffield! Do they really honestly care about what is going on around here? It seems to me they are just 'anti-road' people. A point actually raised in this weeks Battle Observer. Any road being built anywhere in the country and some people just jump up and moan and protest!

My final point is that I'm sure the designers will try and keep the road looking nice with trees and shrubs and things. With the Lamberhurst bypass a couple of years back, they planted loads of trees at the road side. And in about 50 years I'm sure it'll look really nice along there. No one complains about the Lamberhurst bypass any more. I think the same will happen with this road. It will all quieten down after a few months of use.

All this protesting is making life very difficult for some people who live around the site. Just the minority making things difficult for the majority, as usual!

Not much snow here, maybe a centimetre.
See you next week, not sure what I'm going to write about yet.

D-I-E-T-S

Yes you've guessed it. The subject of this weeks blog is diets!

They are everywhere at the moment, what with it being New Year and all.
Does anybody really keep to them ? (I'm excluding celebrities and their weird diets from this). To me they just seem to make a person miserable and sad they can't eat a nice chocolate muffin now and again.

In my personal and humble opinion, if you need to lose weight, EXERCISE is the best option. The three best activities you can do are walking, swimming and cycling. They don't need to be boring. Look at all the lovely countryside we have here in the UK, there are loads of trails up and down the country with maps for you to find points of interest with. I'm not the biggest fan of the standard 'walk' but give me a totem pole or stone circle to find and I'm off! Trails are not just for children they can be rewarding for adults too. It may take a while to find one you'd like to do but think how good you'll feel afterwards!
Everyday while away at Uni I try to have atwhen you get into the swing  least an half an hour walk, just think, do you really need to take the car? Even if it's stinking wet I try and get out there. I know it helps me to sleep among other things.

With swimming you can set yourself targets and stuff. I always do 30 lengths, maybe a few more. With swimming I know there's the issue of having to wear a swimming costume in front of other people but if you look, there are some good suits now that can cover everything up.

Cycling, well there's lots of trails about with flat easy surfaces and no cars. Along old railway lines and things like that. You can always hire/buy a tandem and go with company.
Another thing I reckon would change peoples perception of exercise is if they went back to playing school sports. Lots of pople do do that I know but I think others are put off by the competitive nature of the veteran leagues and things. I think there needs to be more recreational veteran school sport teams. You never know you could set one up yourself!
Yes exercise can take time and effort to organise but it'll all be worth it in the end, you can even have that chocolate muffin I mentioned earlier as a reward when you get into the swing of things.

Wow I written like a self help essay, oops it wasn't supposed to be like that!
See you next Sunday when I'll be musing about a certain Link Road...

For now, keeeeeep exercising!

The Sound of Music!

First of all-Happy New Year to you dear reader! It is one of my New Year's resolutions to start a blog so here it is.

Welxome to Miss Pencil's musings on life and so on...anyway on with the show.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Yesterday I declined an expedition to go and see the Life of Pi in 3D at the cinema. This was because I wanted to stay at home and watch the Sound of Music. Why? Such madness! I hear you cry. Well, I have seen it at least five times now but that was before I was an adult. I was interested to see what I would make of it now as a grown up. Would I fast forward through I Have Confidence (I used to think it a boring song!), would I fast forward through all the Maria and Captain V-T's romantic bits (boring!) or would I fast forward the Nazi's raid on the Abbey (very scary!)

No I didn't....

I thought it was brilliant, I loved every minute. The romantic bits are amazing! I Have Confidence is actually a really good song and the scary bit, I coped!
However I did notice a couple of subtle things that I've never noticed before.
1. When the Captain, Uncle Max and the Baronness are driving to the house they pass a monastery and you can hear the monks singing the same song as the Nun's sing at the beginning.
2. Franz the Butler is a baddie! When Rolf/Ralph/Ralf? first comes to deliver a telegram, Franz opens the door and asks 'Any developments?' and Rolf/Ralph/Ralf? replies 'soon yes soon' or something like that.
3. The BBC must have been showing it in HD or something because the picture quality was really clear and the colour was excellent. I couldn't remember all those shots of Austrian landscapes at the beginning before Julie Andrews' hill twirling.

So an afternoon well spent I think and if you haven't seen the Sound of Music, WHY NOT!
Show it to your children before it's too late and they have taken up Call of Duty or start listening to One Direction. This beats them any day.

Will write again soon, (Saturday I am hoping) but for now..
Signing off.
